Kenya heads into the clash full of momentum after recording back-to-back wins in their opening fixtures,a 3-0 victory over Burundi and a commanding 4-0 win against rivals Uganda. The results have underlined the team’s intentions at the tournament and put them in a strong position as the group stage progresses.
South Sudan, on the other hand, have endured a difficult campaign so far. They began with a 4-0 defeat to hosts Tanzania before suffering a 5-0 loss to Uganda, and currently sit bottom of the group standings. Kenya will be looking to capitalise on that form as they push for maximum points and a place in the knockout stages.
Midfielder Diana Wachera believes the squad is building well with each game.
“They were good games. Although our opponents weren’t easy, we gave it our all. We prepared well and applied what we had been taught. Winning the games motivated me, I pushed myself,” she said.
Forward Martha Amunyolet, who has already scored three goals in the tournament, says she’s targeting the golden boot.
“I feel I want to become the top scorer,” she said. “In the opener against Burundi, I believed in myself and scored a brace. I also scored against Uganda, and I have to score in the next game too.”
The two teams last met in 2021 during the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers, where the Starlets recorded emphatic wins — 8-0 and 7-1 — in both legs played at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium.
Kick-off is scheduled for 4PM at the Azam Complex.
